Technics and Time

What does a tool, a machine, or a digital memory prosthesis do to the subject who uses it — and who is using whom? This fourth branch leaves Freudo-Marxism and Western Marxism's culture maps where they are, and follows a different quarrel: Aristotle's techne, Heidegger's Gestell, Simondon's technical individuation, Stiegler's pharmacology, and Yuk Hui's cosmotechnics.

NOTE — Genealogies of Desire keeps Heidegger at Being and Time (1927), folded into Kojève's recognition seminar, and deliberately does not follow the later work or the political catastrophe of his Nazism. This page is that deferred genealogy: the question of technology, not Dasein as care. Same caveats as the siblings — intellectual history, not engineering; "how influential" and "what it was reacting against," not "how well-evidenced." McLuhan, Land, Plant, and Haraway appear only as cross-strains: parallel tech diagnoses, not this lineage's trunk.

The vocabulary this whole page keeps returning to starts in ordinary Greek philosophy of craft. Aristotle, in the Nicomachean Ethics and related texts, distinguishes techne — skilled making, the know-how that produces an artifact according to a rule — from phronesis, practical wisdom about how to live well among people, and from theoretical knowledge of what is necessarily so. A shoemaker has techne; a statesman needs phronesis. Poiesis is the bringing-into-being that techne serves: the house is for dwelling, the shoe for walking, and the maker's excellence is judged by the work, not by the maker's character as a citizen.

That split matters here because almost every later figure on this page is arguing, under different names, about whether modern technology still fits Aristotle's picture — a subordinate craft serving human ends — or whether the relation has inverted, so that ends themselves are reorganized by technical systems. The Grounding timeline already pins Plato·Aristotle for akrasia and the divided psyche; this page only needs the craft vocabulary. Heidegger will claim modern Technik is not techne at all in Aristotle's sense. Stiegler will claim human memory was always already technical. Hui will ask whether Aristotle's Greek cut between techne and cosmology is itself a provincial starting point.

Heidegger's Gestell 1953–54, the question concerning technology

The Heidegger who matters on this page is not the 1927 author of Being and Time that Genealogies folds into Kojève, but the postwar lecturer of "The Question Concerning Technology" (delivered 1953; published 1954). There Martin Heidegger argues that the essence of modern technology is not any particular machine, and not even instrumental means-ends thinking as usually understood. It is Gestell — usually translated enframing — a mode of revealing that challenges nature forth as standing-reserve (Bestand): everything appears as stock on call for ordering, optimizing, and further ordering. A river becomes hydroelectric potential; a forest becomes lumber inventory; a human being becomes human resource. Against the comforting story that technology is a neutral tool we can simply use well or badly, Heidegger claims Gestell already decides in advance what counts as real.

He still hears an older echo in the word: Greek techne was a way of bringing-forth (poiesis), closer to art than to industrial challenging-forth. Modern Technik, on his reading, is a extreme of that revealing that has forgotten its own character as revealing. The political catastrophe of his Nazism — party membership, the rectorate, the postwar silences — is not a side note and not this essay's subject: it is why many readers refuse to treat his technology diagnosis as detachable wisdom. This page follows the technology argument because Stiegler, Simondon's readers, and Hui all take Gestell as a load-bearing foil or ancestor, not because the biography is settled or forgiven.

What this piece does not follow: fundamental ontology after the "turn," the full Hölderlin and poetry lectures, or a rehabilitation brief. The sibling desire genealogy already said those are their own maps. The bridge from 1927 Dasein to 1954 Gestell is real — care and worldhood make the later claim about revealing intelligible — but the quarrel changes: from how a finite existence is thrown into a world of tools, to how a planetary technical revealing reorganizes worldhood itself.

Simondon 1958, technical objects and individuation

Gilbert Simondon's doctoral work — On the Mode of Existence of Technical Objects (1958) and the larger individuation thesis — is the main philosophical precursor Stiegler will credit. Against both the hylomorphic picture (form stamped on passive matter) and a romantic humanism that treats machines as alienated spirit, Simondon asks how technical objects themselves individuate: how a crude abstract machine becomes a more concrete one as its elements take on multifunctional roles and couple to an associated milieu. A technical being is not a dead tool waiting for a human essence to animate it; it has a genesis, a metastability, and a relation to the world that philosophy of technology had mostly ignored.

That move matters because it refuses Heidegger's tendency to treat Technik as a monolithic revealing with no internal history of machines. Simondon still diagnoses alienation — culture's contempt for technics, the split between specialist and user — but the therapy is different: culture must learn to think with technical individuation rather than only fear Gestell. Deleuze later picks up Simondon's individuation vocabulary; Stiegler will rebuild it into an account of human memory as always already technical.

Stiegler 1994–2020, Technics and Time

Bernard Stiegler's Technics and Time trilogy (1994–2001) is this page's spine and namesake. His wager: the human is not a biological given that later invents tools; technical exteriorization is constitutive of who "we" are. Against a clean inside/outside of mind and machine, he reads paleoanthropology (especially Leroi-Gourhan) as showing that tools and exteriorized memory — flint, writing, archives, hard drives — are how a mortal, incomplete being inherits a past it did not live. He calls that exteriorized memory tertiary retention, extending Husserl's primary retention (the just-past in a melody) and secondary retention (reactivated memory): the third is the technical trace that outlives any living consciousness.

From there, technics is always a pharmakon in the double sense Derrida recovered from Plato's pharmacy: remedy and poison at once. Writing supports memory and threatens living recollection; industrial temporal objects (film, television, later platforms) can open attention or capture and proletarianize it. Stiegler's organology treats psychic, social, and technical organs as co-evolving systems — an account that can absorb Heidegger's warning about Gestell without accepting technology as a single destiny, and that can absorb Simondon's genesis of technical objects without leaving politics and desire outside. Late work turns harder toward disruption, attention economy, and the need for a new critique of political economy of the digital; this piece does not follow every pamphlet, but the pharmacological and organological frame is the lasting export.

Yuk Hui 2016–, cosmotechnics

Yuk Hui's The Question Concerning Technology in China (2016) takes Heidegger's title and refuses his European frame as universal. If Gestell names a particular modern Western revealing, then treating it as the essence of technology repeats the provincialism it diagnoses. Hui's counter-concept is cosmotechnics: the unification, in a given culture, of cosmic and moral order with technical activity — not one Technik, but historically plural ways technical practice was bound to cosmology. Chinese thought, on his reading, offers resources for thinking technics otherwise than as standing-reserve, without nostalgia for a pre-technical Eden and without simply importing Heidegger as Asia's destiny.

Later essays and Recursivity and Contingency push the same pluralizing pressure against a homogenized digital globalism. For this map, Hui is the explicit non-European hinge the techne line needed: not an Axial cameo in a prehistory section, but a contemporary argument that the Gestell story is one history among others. Stiegler remains a major interlocutor; the disagreement is whether organology still needs a stronger dose of cultural and cosmological difference than European philosophy of technology usually allows.

Cross-strains parallels, not this trunk

Marshall McLuhan, covered in Constellations of History, diagnoses media as environments that remake the sensorium — "the medium is the message" — without Heidegger's Gestell vocabulary or Stiegler's tertiary retention. Useful rhyme: both treat technical form as world-shaping. Different quarrel: McLuhan wants the environment made visible; Cultural Studies then rejects his determinism. This page does not restage that fight.

Nick Land and Warwick accelerationism treat capital/technics as an autonomous optimizing process to be pushed further; Noys names and refuses that program. Stiegler's pharmacology can sound adjacent — technics as fate-shaped — but his politics run toward care, education, and reinvention of the pharmakon, not Meltdown. Keep them parallel.

N. Katherine Hayles's How We Became Posthuman (1999) is the feminist STS hinge on this map: against cybernetics' dream of information without bodies, she insists on embodiment and materiality — a parallel to Haraway's cyborg and a useful foil to any Gestell story that forgets gender and labor. She is not Stiegler's school; she is why the techne line cannot stay only Heidegger–Simondon–Stiegler–Hui.

Carolyn Merchant's The Death of Nature (1980) is the ecofeminist precursor: the scientific revolution, she argues, remade nature as dead, controllable matter — a gendered domination story that rhymes with Gestell without sharing Heidegger's vocabulary. Merchant sits beside, not inside, the Simondon–Stiegler trunk: another feminist pressure that techne is never neutral craft.

Donna Haraway's cyborg and Sadie Plant's cyberfeminism (and Xenofeminism downstream) are feminist technics that refuse both pure nature and pure Gestell-despair. They belong on the desire genealogy's map; they appear here only so the timeline can show the kinship without pretending Stiegler and Haraway share a school.

The desire genealogy asked whose interests the unconscious serves. The history constellation asked what a cultural form does politically by existing. This branch asks a third question: what technics do to time, memory, and the possibility of a subject who could still care. Gestell says the revealing has already decided. Simondon and Stiegler say technical genesis and pharmacology leave the decision open — poisonous and curative at once. Hui says even that European frame is one cosmotechnics among others.

None of those answers settles Freudo-Marxism or Western Marxism. A hard drive can be tertiary retention and, completely independently, a node in communicative capitalism or standing-reserve logistics. The maps are meant to sit beside each other, not collapse into one master diagram.
