Fiction that theorized back thinkers ← novelists
reverse arrowsload-bearing debtsnot every citation
The bands above run theory → fiction. This section flips the arrow for cases where a thinker already on the philosophy maps treats a fiction writer as formative — seminars, whole books, named debts — not every essay that “mentions Kafka.” Same bar, opposite direction.
James Joyce → Lacan. Late Lacan rebuilds the symptom as sinthome through Joyce (especially Finnegans Wake): writing as a singular knotting that can hold a subject when the Name-of-the-Father does not. Seminar XXIII is not applied psychoanalysis of an author; Joyce is the occasion that forces the theory to change. Poe’s “Purloined Letter” is the earlier structural hinge in the same career.
- Joyce — Ulysses, Finnegans Wake (Lacan’s late literary laboratory)
- Poe — “The Purloined Letter” (letter as pure signifier in transit)
Franz Kafka → Deleuze·Guattari, Benjamin, Adorno. Deleuze and Guattari’s Kafka: Toward a Minor Literature (1975) makes Kafka a machine for political enunciation, not an Oedipal case study. Benjamin’s Kafka essays and Adorno’s Kafka/Beckett readings grow Critical Theory’s sense of administered life and damaged experience through the fiction. Kafka is already ambient on this page via Abe; here he is a source for the maps’ theorists.
- Kafka — The Trial, The Castle, stories (minor literature; law as opaque machine)
Proust · Baudelaire → Benjamin, Deleuze, Adorno. Benjamin’s Arcades project and Baudelaire essays treat the poet of the modern crowd as historical sensor; Deleuze’s Proust and Signs rebuilds learning and jealousy as a semiotic apprenticeship; Adorno reads Proust for experience and social criticism. These are not hobbies — they are how constellation, sign, and damaged life get articulated.
- Baudelaire — Les Fleurs du mal, Paris prose poems (Benjamin’s modern)
- Proust — In Search of Lost Time (signs, habit, involuntary memory)
Samuel Beckett → Adorno (and ambient Deleuze). Trying to Understand Endgame is Adorno working out aesthetic autonomy and the “new” after catastrophe inside Beckett’s form. Drama more than novel, but narrative experimental writing in the same debt class.
- Beckett — Endgame, Molloy / the Trilogy (form after meaning’s collapse)
Dostoevsky → Nietzsche, Freud (upstream). Nietzsche praises Dostoevsky as the psychologist who discovered the underground; Freud’s “Dostoevsky and Parricide” binds the novels to the Oedipus complex and epilepsy debate. Direction matters: Dostoevsky shapes the maps’ founders more than he is their student — the reverse of Mann or Svevo.
- Dostoevsky — Notes from Underground, The Brothers Karamazov (ressentiment; guilt and law)
Sophocles → Freud. Oedipus Rex is not a literary example pasted on afterward; it is the myth Freud claims the clinic rediscovers. Drama, not the novel, but the clearest “narrative that theorized first” pin on Grounding.
- Sophocles — Oedipus Rex (name for the complex; destiny as misrecognition)
SF / weird fiction → Haraway, Fisher. Haraway’s cyborg manifesto treats science fiction (including writers such as Octavia Butler and Delany) as speculative partners for socialist-feminist theory, not raw material to decode. Fisher’s capitalist realism and hauntology grow beside Ballard, weird fiction, and cancelled futures — Ballard already sits above as Freud/Surrealism weather; here the arrow also runs Ballard → Fisher.
- Butler, Delany, and kin — SF as theory’s co-author (Haraway)
- Ballard — crash/atrocity landscapes as Fisher’s late-capitalist sensorium
Balzac (and the realist novel) → Lukács. Lukács’s defense of realism and totality is argued through the nineteenth-century novel’s capacity to typicalize social relations — Balzac as method, not ornament. Jameson later inherits that literary-theoretical habit into postmodernism’s cognitive mapping.
- Balzac — La Comédie humaine (typicality; society as knowable whole)
