The fork
Freud, Marx, and Hegel sit behind all four essays. Each page asks a different question of that inheritance. The maps are meant to sit beside each other, not collapse into one master diagram.
Can the id, the ego-ideal, or Lacan’s objet a be more than useful fictions: actual patterns in chemistry, circuitry, and the language a brain is soaked in?
Whose interests does the unconscious serve, and can it be organized toward liberation, or toward whatever accelerationism thinks it is speeding up?
What does a form (a novel, a film, a shopping arcade) actually do, politically, by existing? Culture as how class struggle is won or lost, not decoration on top of it.
What does a tool, a machine, or a digital memory prosthesis do to the subject who uses it, and who is using whom?
Grounding the Unconscious
The essay is a live, contested research boundary. Some links (Solms and Panksepp, Friston) are empirical programs. Others (Žižek, Johnston, Hofstadter) are philosophical analogies, useful for thinking, not measurements. Freud did not invent the idea that people are moved by forces they cannot see. He inherited a long argument about it.

First a split by accessibility, then a split by function. “The ego is first and foremost a bodily ego”: it starts as a projection of the body’s surface, a hook later neuroscience actually uses.

Three different machines, not three footnotes to Freud. Mixing them as “the unconscious says” is the mistake the essays try to block.
Grounding · synthesis
If you force the survey into one developmental story, it sorts from most physically settled to most language-mediated. Dreams are the case study where the camps actually collide: disguised wish, pontine noise, continuity of waking concerns, threat or social simulation, NEXTUP’s weak-association search.
Subcortical affect circuits, hypothalamic and brainstem homeostasis, neurotransmitter tone. The id. Best-evidenced link in the survey.
Prefrontal maturation regulating subcortical arousal, shaped by attachment. The ego and early conscience. Moderately grounded.
Language networks and mentalizing systems internalizing a social narrative. The Symbolic, superego, ego-ideal. Least directly measurable.
Genealogies of Desire
Intellectual history, not an empirical grounding project. “How well-evidenced” is the wrong axis; “how influential” and “what it was reacting against” are. Freud and Marx were fused in the 1920s, blown apart by French theory in the 1970s, remixed at Warwick in the 1990s, and split again.
The running argument is older than that fusion. Kant says the subject is a function, not a substance. Hegel says that function only completes itself through another’s recognition. Everyone after them disagrees about which direction “liberation” points.

Constellations of History
A constellation, for Benjamin, configures scattered particulars so they light each other up, rather than a concept swallowing examples. The page turns that method on the tradition that produced it. Western Marxism’s founding break is a double failure: 1917 did not spread west, and independent theory was crushed inside the USSR.

Eurocentrism is partly inherent in Western Marxism’s sources. The colonial-critique band sits inside this map because these thinkers argue with Sartre, Hall, Derrida, Anderson, and the culture-theory current, not on a separate planet.

Habermas: communicative rationality already implicit in ordinary speech. Honneth: pathologies as misrecognition (love, rights, esteem). Fraser: keep redistribution beside recognition, or critique turns culturalist. Rosa: modernity’s mode is dynamic stabilization: growth and speed-up merely to reproduce the status quo. Resonance is the proposed world-relation against that.
Rosa’s social acceleration is a diagnosis of pathology. Warwick accelerationism is a program that wants the process pushed further. Weeks, Han, Crary, and McKerracher’s timenergy sit beside Rosa as peer diagnoses of exhausted time, not as Frankfurt succession.
Technics and Time
This fourth branch leaves Freudo-Marxism and the culture maps where they are. Genealogies keeps Heidegger at Being and Time. This is the deferred genealogy: the question of technology, not Dasein as care.
Companion map
Every theory of consciousness answers two questions. Is the mind computable: could a program, on the right substrate or any substrate, be one? And once you have mapped the mechanism, does anything remain unexplained?
Descartes, Nagel, Chalmers, panpsychism, Kastrup and Albahari’s idealism, Faggin, Bohm, McGilchrist. Experience is not exhausted by function, or it was never a late product of dead matter.
Turing, Crick, global workspace, Seth and Barrett’s predictive processing, Hofstadter’s strange loop, Dennett, Ryle, the Churchlands. Penrose and Searle refuse computability from the other side of that plot.

How to read them
A construct like the id can be a reasonably well-evidenced claim about the SEEKING system and, completely independently, a live political stake in an argument that has been running for a century. A hard drive can be tertiary retention and, independently, a node in standing-reserve logistics, or software that stores race and class as if they were the future.
Grounding asks what maps onto tissue. Desire asks whose interests wanting serves. History asks what a cultural form does by existing. Technics asks what tools do to time and the possibility of a subject who could still care. Fiction stages the same problems in the open, on the condition that everyone already knows it is a story.
